Decent Espresso Calibrated Tampers

What is a tamper?

A tamper is a small coffee tool used in espresso making. It's used for pressing (or “tamping”) the ground coffee evenly into the portafilter before brewing. The goal is to create a flat, compact puck of coffee so water flows through it evenly under pressure.

What makes a Decent tamper?

Our tampers are built for simplicity: just push to tamp.

First, it has a leveling plate, which means you'll never have to worry about uneven tamps again. Then we added an additional spring so that you always tamp with the right amount of pressure. And finally, we offer several beautiful handle options made from high-quality wood or metal that cater to your personal taste.

In partnership with Wiedemann (the Germany-based masters of espresso wood) we present the Wiedecent Tamper in several beautiful wood handles.

New in v6:

  • Second spring provides consistent, precise tamping pressure.
  • Bushings ensure smooth, wobble free operation.

    Repeatable Tamping

A calibrated spring ensures identical tamping, even between different people.

    Calibrated to Perfection

Our tests found that the grounds are fully compressed at 15lbs. More pressure is not needed.

    Avoid Overtamping

Many people press harder than they need to, and thus increase muscle and joint strain, as well as the risk of repetitive stress injury.

    No more untamped rings

Tampers that don't fit snugly in a coffee basket leave an untamped ring of grounds, which promotes side channeling and bad tasting espresso.

    Guaranteed for two years

If any component breaks, send us a photo and we will send you a replacement for free. The non-magnetic stainless steel base is highly corrosion resistant.

    Comfortably Solid

Each tamper is made on a computer controlled lathe, not a mold, and the base is accurate to 0.05mm. Our large, rounded handle feels great in the hand.

    Paired with our basket

Also works with most baskets on the 58mm standard (such as E61 espresso machines).

    Perfectly Vertical Tamps

Using our tamper with our paired basket means that sideways tamps are literally impossible.

Tight fit, but not too tight

Our tampers have a 58.35mm base, because that will eliminate the untamped ring that a less close-fitting tamper produces. We do not recommend 58.5mm tampers. Such a close fit can suck the puck up as you lift the tamper.
